This is not a frequency, amplitude, time-based lens, but a hologram-like spatial view from the perspective of a comprehensive analytic system capable of accurately reproducing the aspects of spread (width), depth, and height based on the relative strength, location, and source(s) of a biome’s acoustic signals. Bioacoustic mapping models like these, along with more in-depth post-capture analyses, give us more insight into the acoustic structure of the habitat and the ways in which it operates organically as an expressive unit. Biophonies also define the limits of a habitat’s dynamic equilibrium, that is, its dynamic range over time, giving us the agency to tease additional meaning from the signals. For example, with the recorded data in hand, certain types of spectral and temporal cause and effect analysis can show the impact of resource extraction, climate change, land transformation, anthropophony, and weather-related dynamics. All of these, more completely fleshed out, endow resource management teams with more precise forecasts before the sometimes irreversible result of certain activities. A good application paradigm for this process might be a bioacoustic environmental impact review of the route planned for the Keystone XL pipeline, so there is adequate baseline data from which to compare biome status before and after.
